Who has the Privilege?

Dear Toni Morrison,

One of the many issues your article shines a light on is W.E.B DuBois' term the "psychological wage" or in today's modern vernacular, "white privilege." Similar to your example of a European immigrant shunning a Black man from a job, in class we discussed this term in the context of American slavery where poor white men used their whiteness to feel more superior than the Black slaves. I think you state beautifully and simply that in America's foundation the Black man is the common enemy, the scapegoat for any blemish or fault in society. We have seen this time and time throughout world history, it is often the way white citizens unite under one common enemy and the way tyrannical leaders achieve power over these citizens. It is a truly a dangerous cycle that continues to push civil rights a few steps back in America. I wonder if you think the image of a Black person or any person of color as the adversary in America and as an obstacle for jobs or opportunities will ever diminish. Why are the people with the least amount of power and influence to blame for failure in the society that benefits them the least?
