What is the real freedom

Dear lady from the "firstest families",

Since it is very unlikely that I will ever meet you again after my arrival at the free state, I will tell you, in a straightforward manner, that your hypocrisy is hellishly obnoxious. You claimed that you were doing the best for poor Ned's sick wife, yet your "best arrangement" was to sell her away from her dear husband. Let's face the truth, you do not care even a little bit about her health and well-being as you declared to be. The single reason behind your action was that she could work no more under her severe sickness. You assumed that your bondsman had no emotion and no intelligence. When they showcased that they were not fond of your decision, you thought "they never know what is the best for them". Let me tell you, ma'am, as a former bondswomen myself, what true freedom means. Freedom is taking control of our lives whether it will turn out to be outstanding or ordinary; freedom is no need to worry about if we will be ruthless separated from our beloved family and friends under your single words; freedom is to be men and women under our freewill rather than your "best arrangement". Your words were a scathing indictment of the evil white supremacy have brought. Let me tell you ma'am, you do not know what is the best for us, we do. And you so-called good masters, do not take care of us as human-beings, but treat us such as the cattle you own. You feed them, water them, clean them, put on a pretentious face and hypnotize yourself restlessly into believing your were the embodiment of humanity. However, all these are for the purpose of selfish exploitation.
At last, I would like to inform you, out of my very own sincere kindness, that I was never the gentleman Mr. Johnson, but a poor light-skinned former slave as the one you have sold away.
In a free state now, I feel honored to tear up your hypocritical mask.

Sincerely,
Ellen Craft
