The American Identity
Dear Liz Lin,
I found your article very fascinating, especially your analysis of the “black and white binary that usually frames conversations about race in this country”. Do you believe it is a good thing that our country is framed as such? What impact do you believe this social setup has on the Asian American community? You mentioned in your article that the cultural values, immigrant mentality, and model minority myth play a role in the lack of Asian American involvement, but do you believe this mentality of having the black and white communities pitted against each other is another reason Asian Americans keep their voice from being heard? Being half Indian and half German myself, I, too, find myself wondering where I fit into the conversation of race in America. I neither fit into a category of black nor white (or even asian), but I understand the complication you face in regards to finding your place in racial discussions of our society.
Sincerely,
Jahnavi Bhavsar
