Prisoner of Whiteness

Dear Clare,

Though I envy your life, I would never place myself in your position. To constantly live in fear of being found out seems to me the opposite of the freedom you hoped to achieve by passing. Your every action must be planned out so as to not ruin your cover. Your existence resembles more closely that of a prisoner than anything else. You are a prisoner to the identity of "whiteness" you claim. Yes, I also pass, but only when necessary in my context-- a much simpler cover to keep. The ability to pass is both a blessing and a curse that has been afforded to us, butI hope you use it wisely. That is to say, unless you truly wish to get caught, you must be more careful. Imagine the consequence to your daughter if you were found to be one of us, let alone yourself. I think it wise that we non longer see each other.

Irene
