Jazz and Intersectionality
Dear Nina Simone,
As Brown's article compared transitioning to intersectionality to going from classical music to jazz, your history seems to draw a near perfect parallel. In leaving classical music behind, you went from order to chaos, though not willingly, and entered a much more complex, dynamic understanding of the world. This wasn't by choice, though-- the classical music world was exclusively white. Similarly, non-intersectional social movements and dialogues are solely applicable to white people, thus pushing people of color out. This is an incredibly complex issue, and I can only scratch the surface here, but I hope to gain a deeper, more contextualized understanding of your journey.
