Dear Sarah,
The death of mister Wayles has shaken me to my core. I will spare you the fake and tell you my truth: we may never see each other again. You and your siblings have given me meaning in this difficult life of bondage, but if I have learned anything from this hell it is that family can never truly be separated. Our bodies may be torn from one another, our souls may weep until our eyes become arid, our lives may be forever changed, but nothing can make us love each other less. We also could be blessed by Something more powerful than us--no matter what, I love you, and I love my family. Never let anyone who tries to control you take that away. It is all we have.
Love,
Your mother, Elizabeth
