Dear Mr. William Craft,

Your narrative captivated me. Your careful tracing of your wife's and your own lineage confounds me, for in the time you were alive, such a thing would seem to be nearly impossible without any of your own documents confirming the stories. What particularly caught my attention was the importance of religion in your opinions. While I knew that the ruling minority of the South were the majority of slaveholders, their supposed virtuousness never crossed my mind. How is it possible that, regardless of their belief in white superiority, people so engrossed in the ways of God be able to tear apart families and watch a mother grieve, and do so with utter complacency? Does this action cause slaves, former slaves, or even African Americans in general to lose faith in their religion or of the natural good in people? African Americans have continued to contribute countless things to society which their oppressors will ultimately benefit from; why would they do so?

Sincerely,
Luca MacDougall
