Day 4: A Letter from Clare to Irene
The
following is a letter written from Clare Kendry to Irene Redfield, based on the
novel Quicksand & Passing.
Dearest Irene,
Rene, I really do not know what you are
thinking of. Perhaps you despise me, perhaps you are just too busy. I was very
selfish indeed.
But I do believe you might not see that I
am truly lonely. I went whale watching the other day. The whale is the most
powerful creature in the ocean — it is the center of
attention, wherever it is, and it does not fear attack or hunger. But all it
does is wander, wander mindlessly in the ocean, not knowing where its future
lies. But at least it can sing for its companions, whereas I made a decision to
leave my heritage, my culture, my mannerisms and disposition… I made a decision
I need to live with.
Oh Irene, you will never read this letter,
I cannot afford your pity. But please understand that I need your friendship,
and consider replying my letters.
Love,
Clare
