Conformity in Suburbia

Dear Willow S. Lung-Amam,

In America, the suburbs have typically been representative of complete assimilation. It's imagined that  attaining a nice house in the suburbs, complete with a white picket fence and a nuclear family, is the ultimate American Dream. When one has achieved this, they're American. Assimilation, however, also equates to conformity. This points out the main concept of suburbia-- completely homogeneous communities of middle-class white Americans. The original manifestation of suburban spaces are being completely reimagined, and they are transforming into much more diverse places. However, Asian Americans are continually viewed as foreigners and unable to assimilate, due to the lack of race- and culture-based conformity.
