A Story That Needs to Be Told

Dear George Sanchez,

Could you please send a copy of your book to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue? I believe this administration has a lot to learn about the stories behind the immigration issue they love to villainize. Your book humanizes immigration, depicting the complex experiences of people who left their homes behind to seek a better chance for themselves and their families. This understanding leads to more empathy towards immigrants, which allows for consideration of a response more constructive than building walls and throwing people back to the situations they fled. Reading your account of the Mexican-American experience demonstrates exactly why we ought to view immigrants as people adding to the fabric, and identity of our country, not pests weaken it. Only from that perspective can we help immigrants through the difficult experience you discuss, and allow them the latitude to make their place in this country, without fear of intimidation. I think your book voices this necessity at a time when we need to be reminded of it more than ever. Thank you for shining a light on the stories of Mexican-American immigrants.

Sincerely,
Julia Chaffers
