A letter to Mr. Deloria

Dear Mr. Deloria,
After beginning to read your work in Playing Indian, I found myself questioning the portrayal of Indians in the media.  In section several days ago we discussed how frequently in music videos artists will portray other races often in what they perceive to be a lighthearted manner.  However, the issue I take with this is that it is essentially exploiting an identity for a simple purpose when we have learned that identity is complex and deep, and certainly more than a costume that affirms stereotypes. Another thing that I found interesting was your claim that Americans focus so much on other races because we are sensitive about trying to establish our own.  This knowledge led me to questions: what is American culture?  It seems to me that in your opinion it is everything that it isn't, but the problem with this is that we place our existence along side values of ostracization and exclusion.  We intentionally or not point out and emphasize difference rather than unity.  I look forward to hearing your response.

All my best,
Tatum
